Cold Wax Calligraphic Abstracts

Description

Students build multiple layers with Cold Wax and Oil paint. The wax and paint are brushed, smeared and spread into a pleasing composition of layered, translucent color. Once the layers are completed, Calligraphic marks and patterns are created with various tools. A transfer technique for duplicating words integrate as a collage element that is “layered” within the layers of a cold wax painting. 

Supplies

Supply kit contains:

• Van Gogh Oil Paints – 6 color starter set
• 2 oz Gamsol (Solvent)
• 4 oz. Wax Medium
• Metal Palette Knife
• Ampersand Gesso Boards:
• 2 – 5” x 7”
• 2 – 8” x 10”
• 8 sheets 9” x 12” Van Gogh Oil Paper

In addition to supply kit you will need:

• Gloves
• Paper Towels
• 4 oz tube Van Gogh Oil Paint – (titanium white)
• 16 oz can Gamblin Cold Wax
• Princeton Catalyst Mini Blade Flat #1
• Old Calligraphic Work for collage
• Old Gift Cards or Hotel Keys
• Scissors to cut gift cards
• Stencils and/or punchinella or produce bags or other items for textures
• Small spray bottle
• Favorite Broad Edged nibs and other writing tools
• Favorite Black Ink
• Layout Paper to letter on (takes ink well)
• Tissue paper
• Cheap card stock 8.5 x 11, 3 – 5 sheets
• Removable glue stick
• Favorite short quotes or words
• Scrap Paper (3 – 5 sheets)
• Palette Paper (must have for mixing colors)
• Mark Making tools – color shapers, shish kabob sticks, etc.
• Must have access to b & w printer/copier that can handle thin card stock
