Pastel Dusting Technique

Description

In this 3-hour session, students will learn the pastel dusting technique for adding quick and effective color to black-and-white art or calligraphy. This magic technique, which includes using hand-cut stencils, is good for cards and bookmaking, intensifying areas of color in a painting, or it can be a standalone art masterpiece. Student will learn different ways to use this technique in their art.

Supplies

• Soft pastel sticks (NOT oil pastels or pan pastels); Sally recommends Faber Castell 24 or 48 half-sticks
• X-acto knife (#11 blade)
• Metal ruler and small cutting board
• Kneaded eraser
• Cotton balls and Q-tips
• Large paper plate or small 6-well watercolor palette
• Wet wipes
• Any white paper, and maybe a few sheets of watercolor paper for texture
• Dura-lar sheet, or clear transparent film (from the old overhead projector days)
