Pleated Scroll Book

Description

The pleated scroll is a book form that, when opened, stretches out to a long wall hanging.  The covers are chyogami-paper-covered boards and the “book” is bound with waxed linen thread and bead embellishments.  The pleated inside is made with specialty paper blinds and can be black or white.

Supplies

• Cutting mat
• Awl (best: Japanese screw punch or leather punching tool, if you have one)
• Binding needle with big eye
• Small crochet hook (#12)
• Pre-folded paper blinds from Lowe’s (white or black); cut a section about 6” long and 8 folds. (Width & number of folds can vary, depending on desired size)
• 2 Cover boards, 1-1/2” x 6-1/4” (¼” larger than the folded paper size)
• 2 Pieces Chyogami or decorative paper to cover boards, 2-1/2” x 7”
• Black or white 1mm waxed thread, 60” – 72” (5’ – 6’) in length (for 8 folds)
• Double-stick tape
• 2 crimp beads for each scroll book
• Beads for finishing top loop and thread tails

Pastel Dusting Technique – 3-hour workshop

• Soft pastel sticks (NOT oil pastels or pan pastels); Sally recommends Faber Castell 24 or 48 half-sticks
• X-acto knife (#11 blade)
• Metal ruler and small cutting board
• Kneaded eraser
• Cotton balls and Q-tips
• Large paper plate or small 6-well watercolor palette
• Wet wipes
• Any white paper, and maybe a few sheets of watercolor paper for texture
• Dura-lar sheet, or clear transparent film (from the old overhead projector days)
